European commission president Jose Manuel Barroso has emphasised the importance of the EU policy target of halting biodiversity loss by 2010 in the foreword of a report released in february. Compiled by NGO BirdLife International, the report uses case studies from around Europe to illustrate human benefits of wildlife, such as the provision of ecosystem services that support economic activity. It warns that the 2010 target remains unlikely to be reached unless biodiversity is integrated more into EU policies.

Heritage Council's Biodiversity Watch Project allows you to enter sightings of plants and animals you see in your area ie in a local park, woodland or seashore. There's also a Nature's Calendar watch and a Road Kill Survey. No registration necessary.
