Planning in the National Interest Minimize

'The Integrity of the planning process is a vital national interest. Bad planning decisions sentence generations to live with the consequences thereof. The courts, in interpreting the legislation should, in my view, never lose sight of this overarching national interest.'

Mr. John Hedigan - Unreported, High Court, 11 March 2009

National Spatial Strategy Minimize
The National Spatial (NSS) Strategy is a national planning framework for Ireland from 2002-2020. The key to the strategy is the balanced regional development. The intention of the Strategy is to guide 'future infrastructural, industrial, residential and rural development in Ireland while providing protection for our cultural, natural and environmental heritage'.

The National Strategy also takes account of the European Spatial Development Perspectiveagreed in 1999 by the EU member States.
A full range of resources on the National Spatial Strategy is available atwww.nss.ie and at www.environ.ie. You can view the full text of the National Spatial Strategy here.

In 2010 the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government published a review of the NSS and is available to download below:
